• belly
Belly, a trilogy of related shorts, navigates the intersections of violence, rape and motherhood. These pieces have a visceral, almost sensuous effect on an audience.
In the first piece, belly, a loving, yet unstable single mother discovers her unwed daughter is pregnant. The mother, determined to prevent her from experiencing her same fate,
takes them on a fatal joy ride for ice cream, cake and the sea.
Bellies at rest / in motion / and other problems in inertia is the second piece in the trilogy. It is the retelling of an abortion physician’s widow,
who receives one dozen roses from her husband’s murderer. She refuses to accept the duplicitous gesture, however and returns the roses.
The third piece, the life before / reconstruction / reconstructing whiteness is set in the distant future when people of color out number people without color.
People without color live above with the sun, moon and stars. People with color live below in darkness. Midwives monitor the pregnancy of women of color.
Will Una give birth to a pure brown off-spring? How will people without color reconstruct whiteness?
