nightbathing
a musical dream play

Full-Length, Drama/Dark Comedy / 5 W, 2 M

No Intermission

Set: A hospital bed; projections / scrim non-naturalistic / platforms / shadows and light

Musical Score by composer, Bruce Monroe.

From her hospital bed, 23-year-old Romy Harper relives her childhood nightwalks with her mother, Hallie Luna Jane McNeil. She is guided by her mother’s ghost and a Motown-inspired trio of her psychosis, into the past to face her idealized memory of those walks under the moon and stars. Will Romy continue to live in the shadows like her mother? Or, will she follow the sun, embrace whatever comes and find a place beneath the gaze of the sheltering sky?

nightbathing has a riveting and haunting score that borrows from Jazz, Gospel, and R&B idioms. As in traditional opera, the music tells the story as much as the text does.

Reading: The Public Theater (1995), Robert O’Hara, Director. Supported by the Yip Harburg Foundation
